Started in 2001, the .NAME domain name extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to obtain john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level names remained active.
